A training workshop for monitoring marine and waterfowl birds for the Arab Gulf countries

A training workshop for specialists in bird monitoring, aimed at implementing a standardized method for monitoring and counting marine and waterfowl birds in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), began today in the city of Jubail. The workshop is organized in collaboration between the General Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council and the National Center for Wildlife. The workshop will continue until August 31st, with the participation of delegations from all GCC countries.

The workshop commenced with a welcoming speech by the CEO of the National Center for Wildlife, Dr. Mohammad Ali Qurban. Dr. Mohammad Yaslem Shbarakh delivered the speech on his behalf. During his address, he emphasized the importance of developing monitoring and tracking programs by relevant authorities responsible for bird conservation in the GCC countries. He stressed the need to enhance the capabilities of specialized personnel from the GCC in this field, which is the main objective of this specialized workshop.

Following the introductory session, the workshop’s lectures covered topics such as bird protection, their migratory routes and sites, the concept of protecting migration pathways, important bird areas for biodiversity, criteria for their selection, the significance of marine and waterfowl bird habitats in the Arabian Peninsula, as well as preparations for monitoring and counting. The workshop also emphasized the importance of preparing maps, identifying locations, and creating a census program and counting models.
