113 sites have been identified for long-spine sea urchins

Published Date

A team from the National Center for Wildlife recently conducted field surveys to assess the status of long-spine sea urchins in the waters of the Kingdom. This was part of the center’s commitment to periodic monitoring and evaluation of marine environments. The research team was able to identify 113 sites along the coasts of the Red Sea, the Arabian Gulf, and the Gulf of Aqaba over a two-week period, in collaboration with various organizations.

These periodic surveys are conducted due to the importance of long-spine sea urchins in marine ecosystems. They play a crucial role in controlling the growth of marine algae and limiting their excessive proliferation, contributing to the health of coral reefs. Additionally, they are essential in the marine food chain, serving as a food source for various fish species.
