About Invertebrates

Land invertebrates represent the largest group of wild animals in terms of biodiversity in the Kingdom. They still need many intensive studies, as the information available about them is limited. They are represented in the arthropod class, including the insect class, the arachnid class, the annelid class, and the many-legged kinds such as:

- The class of arachnids, which includes the order of spiders. There are 96 species of spiders in the Kingdom, 35 species of the order of scorpions, and 19 mites species.
- The class of annelid worms including earthworms and medical leeches.
- A multi-legged group, including 44 and the 1000s legged.
- Class of Insects that contain more than 5,000 species of insects that have been recorded in the Kingdom, that are divided into 22 groups. The center seeks to inventory all invertebrate species in different Kingdom regions, focusing on existing and proposed PAs and other important areas for biodiversity including wetland. This shall provide information on the presence of species, patterns of spatial distribution, and abundance of different species information, which will lead to sustain and preserve them.
- Conduct a survey of all previous studies and record the species obtained through these studies on digital maps.
- Conduct field surveys of various types of invertebrates in the Kingdom and uploading them to digital maps.
- Prepare and update national species lists of invertebrate species in the Kingdom to learn about their national status.
- Hold workshops with all specialists in Saudi universities expertise and some international research centers to study the newly recorded species including the species that are widespread or threatened with extinction in the Kingdom.
- Study PAs importance for biodiversity as well as wetland that have not been studied in cooperation with Saudi universities.
-Catalogue invasive non-native species with reports and results submition with proposing recommendations.
- Create a database to record species and their geographical distribution on digital spatial maps. Such facilitates the process of accessing information by employing modern technologies.
- Develop and implement a national action plan to protect endemic and endangered species.
